Every year, millions of cats and dogs are killed each year because there are way more animals than there are homes. SPCA groups, Animal Shelters, and Humane Societies around the world deal with all that they can on limited budgets and limited help. People abandon their pets at an alarming rate. These animals are Killed. Euthanize.
People who know a little about me know I have a dog named Kenni. Kenni was picked up by Animal Control in Montreal. He was taken to a Shelter. From there he was given to a dog rescue group. This rescue group like most has a No Kill policy.
That means, short of the animal having a medical condition that is terminal, or a major behavior problem that could endanger people or other animals, then they will work for as long as it takes to find that animal a real Home. A Forever home. Rescue groups all over the world work to save as many lives as they possibly can. They do this on a shoe string budget, and rely on the kindness of strangers to fund what they do. No task is too large or small, and no problem is to great, for them to fight for whats best for the animal in their care.
Kenni would not be curled on on my bed right now if it was not for people like this. He is lucky, he is a small dog (more desirable) has no health issues and no behavior issues that can’t be dealt with. He would have been adopted I am sure, as long as the original shelter that had him, had the room, and a lot of traffic to get him shown. So he stood a really good chance. Not so for many many others.
So I ask you. Take the time to visit the links below, and get involved. If you don’t want a pet, don’t get one. But help out IF you can. Even if you find a real sweet looking pet at one of the links that makes you think twice about having, but know its not for you. Send an email to the organization that is hosting that sweet face and let them know they are doing a great service, and that they make a difference.
And if you have a pet, or end up with one, give that pet an extra treat, and extra walk, or an extra pat on the head.
